Background Information: Amy Winehouse was raised in the Southgate neighborhood in northern London by her parents Mitchell and Janis, along with an older brother named Alex. During her childhood her love of music was fostered, her parents were fans of Frank Sinatra and other jazz artists. Her parents both have described that Winehouse has always enjoyed attention and would intentionally fake choking fits or go missing on school trips to get attention. Her father, Mitchell, described her as always needing attention and being high maintenance in terms of her desire to be the center of attention. Winehouse attended a traditional school until she was nine years old. Under the suggestion of her grandmother, she auditioned and was admitted to the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School. She attended the school for four years and received the foundation of her performing arts training there. Her parents then divorced when she was 10 years old, due to her father’s long term affair. While her parents’ marriage had been agreeable, Mitchell was often away on business. Winehouse began residing with her mother after the divorce, but she struggled a great deal without the guidance from her father. At age 13, Winehouse transferred to the Sylvia Young Theatre School after winning a scholarship: however, she was expelled a year later for piercing her nose and under performance in her coursework. After her expulsion, she began attending the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.
